Someone says that my Screen or GPU has possibly gone on my laptop, which seems to be a very expenisive fix from what I have read. Anyone have experience with a blank screen with a Apple Macbook Pro 15" (its about three years old so no warranty) I have tried to start with the OS X install disc but its only spinning and nothing else is happening. There is power, but jusr dead! Not sure its worth spending £200 to fix a laptop thats three years old (it has been a great machine though & it wasn't cheap)

First thing I would do would be to try it with an external monitor. If you manage to get a picture, it's your laptop's screen (or a cable to it). If not, it points towards the graphics, which are, unfortunately part of the mainboard of the laptop, which will be expensive. Cable is the cheapest fix. How did the problem start?

Book an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local or nearest Apple store. It is not unknown for them to do repairs for free. Mention something about reading about there being a recall on nVidia 8000 GPUs used in desktops and laptops due to a manufacturing fault and that should be covered by SOGA being a problem on all nVidia 8000 series GPUs acknowledged by the manufacturer.

You need to buy a proprietary displayport cable for the Macbook to connect an external monitor.

I know about the proprietary connector, I have one, and we don't know the exact model that OP has, so may not be the right one, but yes a trip to the Genius bar (with an appointment) will get you some free advice and diagnosis maybe... And who's allimar?! ;-)
