bank charge surprise

Had a letter this morning from Santander demanding a payment of £233 interest charges , I have never used this bank so rang them to ask what it was about., After numerous calls i was told i had poened an account with Alliance and Lecester that required me to pay in £500 per month or incurr a penalty charge of £ 5, per month. this was suppsed to have been opened in 2008, nobody has contacted me until ths letter arrived, according to Santander the account was opened with £1. I asked them could i close the account they said no because they has paid the £1. in,All this is supposed to be have done on line, so how can I have signed to open up this account?. Nobody has ever contacted me re this account so i wonder how ,all of a sudden I have incurred all these charges and what redress I may have against this

Did you open the account or not?

If you did, then you've no comeback I'm afraid because the underfunding charges were explicit in the T&Cs.

You say you've had no contact from them. If it's a Premier Direct account then any correspondence would have been made via e-mail telling you to "view your statement and check any pending charges".

And yes, you can sign electronically these days for accounts...simply by ticking a box at the end of the application process.
  • the question is did you set up the account, can you do a search on alliance and leicester within your email account for 2008,
have A&L /santander been able to prove your email address he account was set up with, or that the £1 deposit was made by yourself.

If so then maybe you owe fees
  • cannot remember having opened an online account with them but i do remember going in to A/L aroung that time to enquire about various accounts but i cetainly would not have signed up to pay £500 per month into an account as i do not have that amount of spare cash They told me at the branch, now Santander that they had put the £ 1 into the account. What i find hard to believe is that you can open up an a/c which is supposed tobe for £500 p/month with£1/

I'd ask them to see the opening documentation that you signed. Being Santander it's unlikely they'll be able to find it.
