advice please - Santander want proof of earnings

Hi everyone I'm looking for some advice on what to do please.

I finished uni 2 weeks ago, so no more student loan for me. I work part time, 9 hours a week. Although the past 2 weeks I have been getting some extra hours, about 4/5 extra per week.

I wrote to all my creditors last week explaining my situation and included a breakdown of my income and outgoings. On my basic 9 hours I get paid £220 a month, which is what I included and have offered token payments of £1 to them all until I find a full time job.

I have received a letter from Santander today asking me to send proof of income to them. I do not want to send them my payslip, as I have been working a bit extra my pay slip shows £300 for this month but the extra cash went to paying back family and I don't want them to think that this will be my typical monthly wage, as for the next 2 weeks I am only working 9 hours, then have 2 weeks holiday which I will only get paid 9 hours for as well.

Can someone advise me on what best to do? Do I have to send them my payslip? I am thinking of sending them another letter saying my hours vary on a weekly basis, and when/if I do receive any extra wages it will be split between all creditors equally. Should I do that?

Thanks!

  • I had the same sort of thing with Barclaycard..I sent a bank statement from a previous month with the account numbers etc. blocked out...I'm hoping this will be o.k....maybe you should contact C.C.C.S. which is free and ask their advice...

You're not obliged to give them proof of income but some creditors will accept your offer far quicker if you do. Send them a bank statement with all your sensitive information (account number/sort code, etc) crossed out in black marker. You're also entitled to cross out any transactions you don't want them to see - £20 transferred in from mum for example, or a few quid spent on Amazon.
  • Thanks, I have already been in touch with CCCS, it was them who told me to write to them with the incoming and outgoings and offer £1 tokens.
The only thing is my last bank statement has my last ever student loan payment on it as well, so I'm not too sure about sending them that either.

In that case continue making the token payments and wait until your next bank statement comes through to send it to them. If you want you can write to or call them explaining that you're waiting for a statement and ask them to hold tight for a month or so.

    Thank you!
I am looking for my bank statement just now, thinking I can maybe skip the page with that payment on it?

I can't think of any reason why you couldn't do that - they only asked for proof of income after all. Although if you bank balance will be showing as significantly high enough to pay the minimum payment (e.g. £1000 in credit from student loan) they might query that.
  • Ok I have found 2 bank statements, one from January when I got paid £227 and one from April when I got paid £260. So do I just take a marker over the rest of the information that I don't want them to see?

Thanks, in Scotland our student loan gets paid in monthly instalments so it's different. I was getting £442 per month. My bank account is always showing as overdrawn on the pages I'm going to be sending them as well.

Oh ok! Well in that case yes just put marker over the information you don't want them to see. Good luck! :)
