IE Upgrade makes Favourites disappear

Hi
I have just upgraded to IE8 only to find that all my favourites have disappeared from the AOL site. Nor can I find how to build them up from scratch.
None of the suggested solutions I could find seem to work and seem to relate to much earlier problems (eg 2003).
Can anyone be kind enough to offer some suggestion to solve this? Anything not involving Microsoft would be greatly appreciated... There are no icons which would cover the amount of stress this is causing.
