Or would it then be necessary for the originator to chase the customer outside of the bank?
It would be necessary for the originator to chase the customer for the remaining balance should there be any.
However in the OPs case to be honest I would just contact them gym and them to confirm when the last DD will be taken. As im sure the OP is in breach of contract for cancelling the DD without notifying them.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
If the gym holds their customers card details then a "blanket stop" won't help at all, they'll just claim the money that way.0

Lets just hope they dont have the OP cards details then. They might even pop round their house and take the money out of their purse/wallet.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -

It was the gym that advised me (in writing via email) to cancel the DD after the payment has gone out on 1st July as they said they can't do it their end. They initially told me (in writing via email) to cancel it after 1st June payment had gone out. It was me being honest that alerted them to the fact that this was too early to cancel!
I have no issues with paying what I owe, my concern was whether the bank would try and charge me for a failed DD if the gym requested the money after I'd cancelled the DD as I wasn't too familiar with how DD's worked once cancelled by the account holder rather than the company.0
