Changing from Virgin Media

I have had no dealings with Virgin or any form of cable as have always lived outside the areas in which they are available. However, my partner's Nan lives in a flat in supervised accommodation for the elderly. She currently has Virgin home phone, but it seems expensive so we are investigating alternatives. She contacted BT who wanted to charge over £100 installation, the warden at the complex is adamant that all the flats originally had BT lines but they deny it. Can anyone guide is in looking for a suitable alternative that can take over the line provided by Virgin, avoiding expensive installation for an elderly lady? I didn't want to put her phone number into any online line checkers as she would end up with loads of sales calls, as i have myself in the past. Any advice appreciated. Thanks
Still looking for the plot...... Anyone seen it???

No company can 'take over the line provided by Virgin' because Virgin is a cable provider and there are no others.

A PSTN telephone line is needed and any number of providers now do line rental with a significant fewer offering line installation too.

If a previous line cannot be resurrected, it should be possible to get BT to install a new line for £30 - but she will have to agree to an 18 month contract and to making at least 10 chargeable or inckusive calls per month to get that price.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Heinz is correct,Cable phonelines do not connect into the BT telephone exchange & work entirely differently than a BT line hence you can't have cant broadband service on cable phonelines.
