i'd speak to your bank about chargebacks for fraudulent activity and immediately blocking your card, ask your bank to send out a full statement so you can check it over, they may have used your card elsewhere too

It's not the OP's card that has been compromised, it's their Paypal account. Paypal will be refunding the customer, not their card issuer. The fraudsters don't have the OP's card details.

The people they have spent the money with will be connected to the hackers... think about it. Call the Police !

    Nonsense.

I can see this from a different point of view as well and wonder if it is going to be as easy as everyone suggests to get the OP their money back.

So someone has hacked the paypal acccount so OP needs to find out how did they do it, either the OP has fallen for a phish, or has an easily guessable password or maybe has a nasty trojan (is that the right word) virus. Then assuming the scammers have hacked paypal they must also have hacked the email address associated with it. Any changes made to the paypal account are notified to the email address for verification, so if they have deleted or intercepted that verification email they must have the email address as well. If for instance they have added a new emaila ddress to divert messages then that change goes to the original email first and a link is clicked to confirm that the request is valid.

That leaves the OP with a serious security breach and at some point paypal just might decide that it a problem for the paypal account owner and not them

As for the suggestion that the sellers might be at fault is wrong. If a person has complete control over a hacked paypal account then they just need to add a gift address and that is covered by paypal seller protection.

As a seller it is immaterial to me whether someone tells me their paypal or ebay account was hacked as if i acted in good faith and sent the goods then I would persue them for any money reclaimed.

OK, maybe this idea is a bit controversial, but how far can we expect a bank or paypal to cover our losses if we lose control of our accounts? I suspect having said all that that paypal will just cover the losses themselves especially once they check that a different IP address was used to access the account, but it is worth thinking about.

From the sellers point of view that is what we get when we get the 'unauthorised use of card or bank chargeback' are you honestly saying that the seller should pay for the insecurity of a buyer who gets hacked?

Hopefully though any seller caught out this way by such a claim will have proof of postage to defend themselves and deny the claim which forces it back onto paypal.

Basically then we sellers have to protect ourselves against buyers who lose control of their personal security and allow scammers access to their paypal and email details.

Happened to a mate of mine to the tune of £1200, paypal weren't interested, she went to the bank and they sent her to the police station before they would do anything to get a reference number, the bank then refunded the money about two weeks later. Never really trusted paypal since because they didn't offer any help or advice, it was just tough luck.

I didn't lose control of my security ..I had the highest settings on PC / security software nor had i answered / opened a spoof email. i was hacked about 4 days after the Playstation fiasco ...coincidence ...maybe but I have been on ebay for 9 years with no other issues!

The only person that "wins" in a situation like this is the hackers .... both the seller and buyer are innocent parties.

However the seller is covered against chargebacks as long as they have kept the POP what protection has the buyer got other than reporting it as unauthorised. Oh and I buy and sell BTW:)

If you believe this is due to the Sony security issue and have used the same info and cards on both them and paypal then talk to them about it as well. Have you got back your email account yet BTW and done a thorough clean on the PC to make sure they are not still working via your email?

I believe it is a huge coincidence after 9 years with same user details etc and no issue at all.

Email account back and runnning and complete clean ( but computer had no viruses or issues at all ) and extra secuirty measures put in place with paypal now

Hackers cause huge problems for everyone involved it took a whole day to get it sorted nighmare

Last week someone hacked my paypal account and spent hundreds of pounds on vouchers for various things.

Hopefully OP has sorted this out somehow, as she hasn't come back to check for any responses since she posted yesterday & then logged straight out.
