Help Please - what is a video capture car?

My son has asked me to get him an Hd video capture card - to record clips from his xbox games I assume.
I've had a look at amazon and there's some things at a fiver and some at over a hundred quid.
So what do I need to get him (bearing in mind that I don't have a hundred quid)?
That's "card" at the top there

I'm not particularly familiar with them, but (in case you weren't sure) a video capture card is a hardware device that allows you to record a video input to a file on your hard drive.
The following web page suggests a few things to consider when buying one:

The easiest thing to do would be to find out exactly what your son wants the card for, then search the web for information relating to that specific use - maybe typing the word "review" into the search engine to bring up reviews of cards that have been used for the same purposes.0 -
It depends on what its going to be used for. You can get a PC card which is added to the PC to allow it to 'capture' a video input or you can get a portable recorder which goes in-between the TV's connection and whatever media you want to record and simply press 'record'. the portable recorder (will try to find the name etc) would be best if he wants to record from multiple sources but im not sure if/how a PC card can record Xbox games.
Find out the exact use first before purchasing.0 -
This is probably what he means. My son has one for his PS3. They like to capture a recording of their gameplay and post it on youtube and the like. Hope this helps

try to find out if it is for a specific game as some already have the capability to capture and upload gameplay to youtube and other sites e.g call of duty: black ops.
It saves the last 30 odd matches and allows you to make clips and upload directly online without any additional software, hardware or payments.
