French/Dwarf Beans - how much ROOT space do they need?

Options
As the title says - I wondered how much room you need for their roots? Can they be grown in pots/growbags?

(lots of bean plants, not enough good ground!)

I have 3 haxnicks shallow (childrens!) planters 10" high and 18" diameter. I have 8 hestia dwarf runner beans in one and they have buds on. In the other two I have 5 dwarf french beans in both and all 3 are looking fantastic

I grew hestia in large black buckets last year and they cropped all through the summer. I have dozens of oskarpeas in a medium planter and they are podding beautifully. Just get good compost and I add watering gel granules and some osmacote plant food

I grew both french and runner beans in Morrison buckets last year and they did very well

I have mine in tin can sized newspaper pots on my windowsill. I dare not plant out yet because the weather is all over the place. They're getting quite big and I'm wondering if I ought to pot up soon. From what I gather, their roots go straight down, and my pots are rather small.

The root ball for a dwarf French bean plant is about as big as my two hands cupped together, and I've got pretty standard sized female hands. So yes, fine in pots but growbags are perhaps a little shallow. You could always cut a growbag across the middle and stand the two halves up on end, with a few holes punched in for drainage. I'd put three bean plants in one of these. Remember you'll have to feed as well as water them after six weeks.
