have vista - want windows 7??

Options
Hi to all you experts out there!

I have an Acer Aspire 5315 (not the best! yes I know!!) but for now will have to live with it.:(

My question is:-

The operating system is Vista home Premium which I loathe as it is so slow and seems to be getting slower! and as I only have 1gb RAM it takes so much space up (of late I have enjoyed watching DVD's and lots more entertainment music and the like is it possible to remove Vista and load Windows 7.
I understand XP is not possible on searching through the net.

Your help would be very welcome. Nothing to complicated for your replies please - am getting older by the minute:rotfl:

best wishes you great lot:A

Your computer meets the minimum requirements for Windows 7. It won't be the most cost effective move for improving speed. Vista is horrible though - I'd tried it with an open mind, but couldn't wait to get off it.

Better to try to fix yours. There are people here willing to go step by step with you to help improve what you've got, as long as you are willing to learn and do what you can. A good start is the thread already written by Closed:

If you have any problems following the guide, then just ask in this thread. Definitely do the first step and post your results here, as the memory on your laptop is quite low and will almost certainly be an issue. The information in step one can tell us just how much of an issue it is.

on any vista machine with 1 gig or less of ram, the first step is always the same....PUT MORE RAM IN IT !!!!!

vista can run reasonably well on 1.5GB (if it's tweaked down some) but better on 2GB. Run crucial's tool on their site to see what type you need then price it up elsewhere (cex is often good for ram, used with 12mth guarantee. I just got a gig of ddr2 lappy ram for £8 delivered :) )

and as per russ' post, follow closed's thread on speeding up a bloaty machine. Do both of these and you'll hardly recognise it :D

for reference, I've just done a 1.6 Celeron running vista for a client. It had 512mb in it, and she wondered why it wouldn't do anything (and I mean anything, she was ready to chuck it out a window). Put an extra gig in it, cleaned it up, and now it boots and gets to a webpage in about 1.5 mins and shuts down in 15 seconds....£8 for a gig of RAM and £some for my time, and it's like a new machine ;)

so, looking at your spec, you've got a slightly faster processor, so you'll be fine if you do the above.

Also, to reclaim some hdd space, follow this post:-

think you read it wrongly then, some 5315's shipped with XP from new, so drivers etc. should be easy to find if you did go down that route :)

However, follow the advice above and you won't need to buy & install a new op sys :D

if you have vista or windows 7 you really should have minimum 2GB of RAM to run the system OK.

You can install XP on it but its harder now shops dont sell it anymore, but if you found someone with an original copy you could purchase it and install. If you dont want to increase the RAM, I suggest downgrading to XP, otherwise your system will start slow and keep getting slower.
