Homebase-all inclusive bathroom

Just thought I should let you know that my parents were given a quote by Homebase £7500 for removing everything from the old bathroom and fitting in everything from tiles, to new spotlights, bath tub, washhand basin to wc etc. The quote was for labour only.
They declined as this was double the amount they were originally given an estimate by the salesman at the shop.
But, when they got home a few hours later they received a call from the builder who had been sent by Homebase to assess the job. He said that he had received a call to say that the quote had been declined but could come to some kind of arrangement as he would do the job privately.
Well the job has been done, excellent work and the builder gave a 3 year guarantee and the labour cost was £4200.
Just thought i'd share that with you all. Don't pay the price they quote as Homebase must take a chunk out of the quote too. Worth asking for the deposit back and waiting for the builder to call back
:D:D
They could excellent workmanship, job guaranteed and paid far less than the original quote. I reckon they could've got a further good price had they haggled but i think they were in such a shock with the final figure that £4200 seemed like a bargain!!!!

Still sounds dear to me..... I wonder what the company would feel about thier employee taking their trade? I wonder why the quote was much higher than the salesman's estimate? I wonder if the quote came from the builder in order to ensure he could offer a much more competitive rate?
Moral of the story, always shop around, I'd never accept an offer of that kind without getting other quotes from other builders.I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -
Homebase commission the work, the builder is cheeky for giving a high quote and then taking the business himself.
It is a big bathroom, but having said that i believe the price for labour should've been around £3500.
My parents didn't want to try a new builder, hassle etc. My father is disabled so really it was my mother who was going to have to keep an eye on the job. They went to Homebase thinking it would be better for their peace of mind. This way they got a good price and the same builder who was working for Homebase, so no risk of the work not being of a high standard.Even time will never heal these scars0 -
How big was the bathroom as £4200 for labour is a bit on the high side.0

Homebase are possibly the worst offenders for looking to make money on the fitting of K&B. Nevertheless, this one sounds a bit fishy to me. £4200 still sounds like way too much for an average bathroom fit, unless there was an awful lot of plumbing work involved.
Methinks I smell a rather large rat.0 -
If homebase work anything like B & Q, which i presume they do then the builder wouldnt have supplied the original quote.
The way these stores price fitting up is per job, everylast little detail has a set price. For example remove an old bath £80, remove basin £40 etc...
The DIY store add all of these jobs on to the quote and each job has a barcode. The the tradesman is paid to do the job and the DIY store keeps the mark up.0 -
I don't have a clue of the actual measurement of the bathroom, but it had a bath tub, shower cubicle, bidet, wc and a wash hand basin. All these needed removing and the old tiles too.
New bathroom was to have a new bath tub, wc and wash hand basin only. Mother wanted just the basic needs in there, I guess everything must've been re plumbed into new places too. Tiling top to bottom and floor.
Still think labour was too high.
Homebase, send their guy round to see what the job entails and to cost the work.Even time will never heal these scars0
