SSP affecting tax credits query ?

Hi, just a quick question i need an answer or advice to please , i have recently rung tax credits to tell them our 10/11 earnings but coincidentally i was put onto SSP and told them this fact while i was on the phone.
The person on the phone told me we will get tax credit payments based on 10/11 earnings as usual, but if i am off work long term that i should project what this current tax years earnings will be and re-contact them as they will give us payments based on this current active year.
As it is very likely that i will be off long term is this info he gave me correct and if it is how on earth do i project and get it right the entire earnings for this running tax year ?
Any info/advice will be gratefully received.

Yes, if your income this year is lower than last year you'll likely get more in tax credits. But you have to guess what your income will be and if you get it wrong you could end up with an overpayment.
You don't have to do this - if you can survive without it then you can carry on receiving payments based on last year's income, and instead you'll get a lump sum when you renew next year if your income was lower.
If you do give an estimate make it on the high side (ie the most you think you'll earn) and if it ever looks like being higher tell them straight away.0
