VOIP Linksys PAP2 Problems! Help

I wasn't sure how to move a post but I didn't have any luck in the Home phone section, so hopefully someone here may help.

I cannot get the IVR working. I've tried plugging in just the phone into the PAP2 with the power cable but I still don't get the menu when pressing ****.

If I plug in the phone to the line and ethernet and power cable then I get two solid green lights on power and internet but none on line 1.

If I plug in just the power and phone RJ to line 1 I just get the power light flashing green.

Do I need to send this back? I couldn't find anyone else whose had this issue. Plenty with dial tone issues - I just wish I could get that far! lol
Help me to help you :santa2:

To overcome I just followed **** by then dialing 110# when hopefully the IP address is announced.

    Hope this helps

Does the thing work at all? I've had a few PAP2s and they don't last long. I think they overheat. Our PAP2s started to flash intermittently, then the normally green LED would stay on red, like it is when it's initialising.

Linksys/Cisco also makes an ethernet router containing the same VOIP/SIP functionality as the PAP2, including two phone ports. It's basically the same firmware but in a decent case and with a hefty PSU. It is the RT31P2. So far, touch wood, it hasn't failed.. it's been on permanently for maybe two years now. I think we paid about £20 for it from Hong Kong. I see they are now as little as £13.

  • perhaps it is a fault. I've looked on the internet and no-one else has this prob. They just say dial **** it is built into the software of the phone so will work. I'll try contacting linksys again....

FWIW, Usually these units are solid. Linksys (aka Cisco) have been in the voice marketplace for years and these stem from Sipura stable, so you'd have to be unlucky to have a bad one that has really and genuinely come from Linksys, but on the other hand you would be quite likely to have bad parts/clone/unlocked if you bought it on eBay from a Chinese seller.

I am friends with the owner of an internet cafe in Dublin city centre. He uses PAP2s to offer discount international phone calls to fat American tourists in shorts. We chatted about the high failure rate of the PAP2s and discussed alternatives (asterisk and FXO PCI cards).

Using the PAP2s, he isn't maximising his profits, since the PAP2 is limited to a single VOIP carrier per phone line. For a given call destination, he should be cherry-picking the best rate from a wide range of VOIP carriers.

I get the sense that these claims about fake PAP2s are cooked up by Linksys/Cisco. It's corporate propaganda - a ruse to cover up the high failure rate of the PAP2 by claiming that the faulty units are "clones". The claim usefully serves to deflect criticism over the evident design faults and poor manufacturing standards of the PAP2 unit.

There might be plenty of grey market imports, but I don't think there are any 'genuine' clones as such. All of the PAP2s on the market were manufactured under license by Linksys/Cisco.

However, there are loads of design faults with the PAP2. Mostly these faults relate to the power supply circuitry, both in the wall wart and faults with the power circuitry on the mainboard itself.

The wall wart for the PAP2 is a cheap and nasty unregulated device that allows the PAP2 to draw whatever it wants.

Apparently there is "a small transformer inside the box (T5), which generates high voltage for ring of analog telephone". That transformer has been known to fail and short 12v to ground, and coupled with the unregulated PSU, the fault cooks the power circuitry of the PAP2.

Someone else has reported that the switch regulators and power filters to the ADM6996 bridge chip may also be defective.

Other reports claim that the overheating problems are caused by poor air circulation and that hacksaw-based remedies can solve it!

  • I bought this from Broadband Buyer it is an original item. I've spoken with Linksys and they said it sounded like a faulty unit due to the fact that the **** does not get the IVR menu. They said it is hardwired into it so that it will bring the menu up. Thanks anyway guys. I'll let you know about the next one lol. I was lead to believe that the PAP2T can split into different carriers? What would you recommend? Can I get one that links a router with a ATA?
