Hi
i have had wireless problems for a few weeks since the router decided not to play ball. It seemed not to be giving out a signal, so it has been replaced with an identical working one. The router is a Linksys WR54G.
Service is providd by Virgin

It is not connected to a pc, it was set up via laptop 1, which works wirelessly, Playstation 3 works wirelessly, but laptop 2 cannot connect, yet works with the ethernet cable inserted.
Laptop 2 was working fine before the problems started.

I have tried ipconfig/release /renew /all, and it comes back with ethernet adaptor wireless network connection: media state media disconnected.
When i try to connect wirelessly it sticks at "obtaining IP address" and has a blankIP addess.
It is driving me nuts now, the laptop is fitted with an Inprocomm IPN 2220 wireless card, which apparently is diconnected.

Can someone please help?

    1. try re-seating the wifi card

    2. MAKE SURE ON THE LAPPY THE WIFI IS PHYSICALLY SWITCHED ON, either by physical switch or keystroke combo (Fn + --, for example)

    3. Check device status in Device Manager, and search for updated drivers whilst plugged in via ethernet..

Try them, and report back :)

  • sorry for the delay, been using dicky laptop, doesnt show any replies, yet on the good laptop it shows up??? been messing about with it after reading various things on the net.
Managed to get a connection with no signal by typing an IP, subnet mask, gateway etc from someone elses instructions, but on ipconfig/all it is showing dchp enabled as no.

1 ??? dont know how to do that? do i have to open it up?
    2 button is switched on
3 drivers are best available, status currently working properly, connected but no signal, also showing as encryption disabled, but it is a secured network

Can you try the lappy on another wifi connection. Mates house, McDonalds / Wetherspoons etc.

  • not at the moment, i will ask the tech guy at work if he will connect it to the works wireless network when i can, any other ideas?

go into control panel > network connections, and delete all wifi connections associated with the wifif card. Then, try to search for a network and re-connecting to yours. Use the lappy in the same room as the router to start with

  • done that, it is connected, but the signal is dropping in and out, if i move the cursor back and forth over the icon on the taskbar most of the time it shows no signal, then occasionally it shows excellent, then drops again.
I have reset the properties to auto select IP address an it is showing to 0.0.0.0 encryption disabled no signal again

go to device manager, uninstall the wifi card, then reboot the lappy to let windows re-discover and re-install it, and try connecting directly then....

  • done that, its stuck at acquiring network address, and on the network connections page it shows the IP address as 0.0.0.0, encryption disabled (it is secure), no signal

  • i'm not that tech minded and would not risk damaging my good laptop by taking it to bits, i'll see if the tech guy at work can try it,
    thanks
