hi,
I use a laptop via a hotel wi-fi. I only open mail & attachments from known sources.
Last Thursday I found that I couldn`t connect to the internet. i ran Windows Diagnostics and received the following message;- Cannot communicate with primary DNS server - pinged the remote server but didn`t receive a response.
I have norton security. I ran Malwarebytes which didn`t find anything.
I`ve spoken with a repair shop who said that it was probably a trojan or virus and also said that he didn`t rate Norton.
My question is does anyone have any suggestions as to what can be wrong and how to fix it given that I can`t access the internet.
I have downloaded the portable scanner as suggested in the sticky BUT if this doesn`t work is there anything else that I can do to detect/remove the problem without taking the laptop in for repair?
any suggestions will be gratefully received.
PS does anyone have a view on Norton OR on a more suitable programme?
thanks,
lakesman

Norton is fine, so the repair man's advice is years out of date like most who have a strong opinion on it.
See what the DNS settings are: Start > Run > Cmd.exe, type ipconfig /all
Double check the TCP/IP settings in all your adaptors.
Make a Hijackthis log, and paste it here if you can do it with whatever you are using to access it.
Reset TCP/IP stack Start > Run > Cmd.exe, type netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt and reboot0
