How to recover desktop after malware

Just had the xp recovery malware virus which I've now got rid of using the tips etc from the sticky etc, but it's left me with a "clean" desktop (just mydocs, bin, ie on desktop screen), also from start>all programs - there's nothing there it just says empty. I can see the "C" drive, but when I click on it theres nothing to see - it appears empty but isn't. The programs/data are all still there, so the virus has simply erased the view. At first "my docs" was empty, but I simply unticked the "hidden" from within properties, but I can't see how you can do that with the C drive. I have the samsung system restore utility which I've used in the past, but can't actually activate it because it's not showing anywhere so I can't click on it. I know the programs are still there because some start up ones are running in the background and they still show in "add/remove programs"

Any ideas on how I can get the views reconstructed - particularly the desktop and the start>programs?
