Best luxury second hand motor for under £10k ?

Options
Toying with the idea of a heavily depreciated luxury motor to drive to the station each day. Auto, FSH, warranty etc. so I have to be willing to feed the garages their slice of pork but I can't go down another route as I don't have the confidence.

Been looking at some Mercs, E class mostly and then onto a Nissan Murano 4x4. Looking for other ideas really.

The idea is to keep it for a few years as the annual mileage will be in the very low thousands, perhaps 3000 to 5000.

My gut feeling tells me that an older car with low mileage is a better bet than a newer model with starship miles. Even all the servicing in the world is not going to keep an engine and the mechanics going forever is it ?

I would go for an E220 CDi, plenry between three an four years old that have above aberage miles for around that orice.

You could always phone up AddLeeCarSales and ask to be phoned when they next sell their E220's. The last two they put on the webpage were £10k, well i think actuall £10.5k to be exact but if you do hardly any miles for three years it will balance out the high miles done in the first three years.

E220 aside, there are loads of nice looking Jaguar S Type diesels around, my usual haunts have them up for well under £10k, actually you see them regularly in the £8k price range. I think the S Type looks nice, and is a proper Jaaag, unlike the smaller XType.

Having said that i have seen several 1owner, above average mile XJ diesels for well under £10k aswell.

Nithing more luxurious than a Jaaaag though.

Must admit my money would go on the E220 CDi, auto and leather. Even the proper Merc build quality is back, at least all the blokes using them for work say they are back to pre '90s build quality, albeit with some cheap plastics, but this is secondhand info so can't confirm deny.

New with starship miles and good history every time mate.

A high mileage car will have had one cold start a day, every journey has been mostly at proper working temp. Little or no stop start driving.

More motorway driving than an urban runner.

I would go for an ex fleet exex car with 80k on it rather than a car 3 yrs older with 60k on it everytime.

Note that i know lots of people that buy their car to make a living, and i have done so aswell. When times are good we may delve into the new car market, but if you putting on the miles you need to keep it longer due to depreciation. But if you buy an above average miles exec from a dealer, or auction then you can change car more often and the depreciation has been paud for by somebody else.

For example i have mentioned Addison Lee selling off their Galaxys recently, now they are three years old and around £8.5k, i thought the price was good, but i thought a new one was about £22k, but i was looking at the Ford website yesterday and a new one in auto/diesel is more like £25k!!!!!!

Ouch, give me an ex fleet high miler anyday, note that when your living depends on something you only buy what works financially. Almost all Addison Lees ex fleets goes straight back to being a Private Hire vehicle, that is why they tend to leave the PH stickers on at point of sale.

Wrong - the low mileage older car will be generally in a lot worse condition due to not being used.

Buy a higher mileage car at a cheaper price, as you are driving low miles, when you go to sell it the mileage will have evened out to average mileage for the year

Why do you want a luxury car that you wil not really be driving? The beneft of a big easy going car is you arrive at your destination still relatively fresh, not sure that will be requred on a run to the station.

Servicing will be high, you will go through exhausts very fast as thy will hardly get warm enough to evaporate all the water they will accumulate.

£10k for a station car btw? :rotfl:

Why not just buy another 1.8 Astra like the one you already have - can pick them up for £4k at 3 years old
