won't the cheapest gas/electric simply be the lowest cost per kwh/ unit of gas (or whatever they are measured in)?? if so can you easily find what these costs will be from one company to the next before i decide who to pick when fixing?

    No .............................

Because they each offer different standing charges, primary and secondary tariffs, DD discounts, dual fuel discounts, fixed rates, fixed terms, variable terms, etc, etc ,etc .............in addition to the varying rates for the fuel itself.

It is almost impossible to do a valid comparison in advance, you have make a series of assumptions. If these are wrong, what you thought was the cheapest supplier probably won't be !!

It's not quite that simple as some have a daily standing charge also, and others have the first so many units at a higher rate. The amount of these higher priced unit changes too so it's difficult to compare.

Hi daisymay, as everyone says , there are so many variables that you need reasonably accurate annual useage figures ( not costs ) to use on a comparison site. To prove the point try a comparison site , first using low figures , say , 2000kw of electricity and 15000kw of gas then double each figure and try again, you will usually find that the cheapest supplier varies.

The obvious you are missing is if Tier 2 rate is indeed the determining factor, and it is universal, then Martin Lewis just has to maintain one table on a web page, put a flashing red frame around the best deal, and job done.

Here's an "obvious" that the utilities are missing:

Sack the army of marketing men and lawyers, hence reducing overhead, and pass on the savings to the customers.
