Tv aerial problem

Inner_Zone wrote: »Wrong. Just because you can receive the free channels it does not make them Freeview as Freeview is only available by a terrestrial aerial. A Sky box will receive Freesat or Freesat from Sky with white card if no longer subscribed or purchased as a FTV card. Freeview, Freesat and Freesat from Sky all have different channels lineups with some channels being on one and not the others.
Feeling a little pedantic are we? Alright so the delivering technology is different as in it is coming via Satellite rather than DTT but low and behold...I'm wathcing the majority freeview channels (and more) via my sky box for free, do I really care what it is called if it works? No, I dont.
Now... where's my microwave oven gone, I fancy listening to Radio 2 on it. :rotfl:0 -
A half update!
Tried the tv upstairs and it found all the channels and was picture perfect so its not the new tv!
Got to wait for husband to get home and then hopefully we can put the downstairs cable in to the point where daughters tv was and hey presto!
Just hope its not the actual cable - that seems like a costly and messy job.
Good progress then. Just make sure you've got both ends of the same cable when you try the downstairs connection, and that there's not a bad/loose connector on one end. It's often the simple things that trip us up. Been there, done that etc.....:)I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Had a similar problem at my fathers house
TV worked fine in one room, using freeview box, but not in another downstairs. He has cable TV so never bothered with it before.
Turns out he has two TV aerials on his chimney, so I can only assume one was newer and picking up a digital signal and t'other one wasn't. The two internal cables I just assumed, were coming from a single aerial.0 -

Next you'll be telling the OP that they need a 'digital' aerial for Freeview.
Where is the miss information (sic)?
Question: Can you receive the bulk of freeview channels through your old digital sky box?
Answer: Yes you can.
As I said before, the delivering technoogy is irrelevant as BBC3 is BBC3 whether it comes from space or from a rebro station.0 -
Ever wish you hadn't started something!? lol
Well, funnily enough, as per a previous poster, it appears we have 2 aerial set ups!
After spending a further 30 mins with husband in the attic and me in the room below, following cables, shouting and leaning out of windows.... we came to the conclusion that we have the old cable and the new cable.
It appears the new cable has either not been attached to the aerial or theres a problem with a connection at some point. The old system is working and that is whats in my little girls room.
So the plan for 2moro night is: feed the cable from daughters room back in to the attic-as it goes directly to the outside aerial- should be simple as the hole is large enough just to pull it back through- its basically sitting in the airing cupboard and not set in to a wall. Then we are hoping that feeding that lead in to the SLX6 way aerial amp will in turn 'switch on' the cables feeding from that.
Failing that I am calling someone in to check the aerial on the roof!
This all came about because we decided to split our lounge in to two and give our children a play room so they could watch their own tv ......... just thankful we bought a tv/dvd combi because at least they can watch dvds for the time being!!
Once again, Thank you for the replies!
P.s I dont think I was clear in my original post re Sky. I meant was there a way of using the signal that comes through the sky dish and extending it to the other tv as a way of picking up ATV/DTV. Not actually using the sky box as a freeview box- does that make sense!? Wasnt sure if there was another output as such on the sky box that another tv could connect to in order to share the signal, thereby bypassing my own tv aerial.0 -
Check how many aerials there are and their locations. Know where the aerial(s) is/are. There could be an aerial outside, on a chimney, house wall, fascia and there could be an aerial in the loft.
Check the cable, newer aerial installations usually use screened satellite cable and older aerials frequently for use with analogue TV is not usually screened, it is usually a brown colour. The screened satellite cable will be thicker. Compare your daughter's cable with the dinning room cable. Looking at the connections in the connector will give the best idea, screened cable has a metal foil under the outer sheath and around the inner fine wires. Seeing it might be difficult without cutting the sheath back a little. Remaking the connection might be worth trying.
Next the aerial connectors can be checked to make sure the connection is sound and there are no short circuits of the fine screening wires with the solid central connecting wire. Take a close look at all parts of the connector and cable.
Is the box in the loft a simple splitter or a amplified splitter such as a loft box? Does it have any power supply to it? Power can sometimes come from the TV and be fed along the cable to power the amplifier in some cases, which might need an option enabling in the TV to output power to an amplifier, but a loft box will usually need a separate power connection.
A loft box would give the best results but would need a power connection which would really need an electrician unless it was powered from a mains socket in some way. I got my power to my loftbox from a ceiling light, but direct connections to the mains like that should only really be done by an electrician because of building regulations.
The connection in the box in the loft could be dead so trying another connector might work.
Also try disconnecting the upstairs TV when you try the downstairs TV in case the box in the loft is only a passive splitter which lowers the signal quality on all connected TV's. More splits means the worse it can get.0 -
well theres no need for the for the argument, the op asked
"is there anyway of using the signal from the Sky box - obviously not for sky channels, just to get the freeview to work."
The clear answer is NO, you can not use the RF out from the Sky box to feed a Freeview receiver built in to the TV
I suspect the idea may have been to feed the RF out from the sky box around the house to use for TV's else where, otherwise why use Freeview at all
As a side note Freesat or Freesat from sky is missing quite a few Freeview channels.
Quest, Yesterday, Sky3 you have to pay to get these from SkyTo alcohol! The cause of... and solution to... all of life's problems!:beer:0 -

All the best
Just had a thought, the Feed from your daughters room goes directly to the Aerial at the moment?
Maybe you have a duff amp, or no power to it, do you know where the amp is powered from?To alcohol! The cause of... and solution to... all of life's problems!:beer:0 -
It might be worth checking the connections before going to all that trouble! If it's a new aerial it might be better than the older one and have newer screened satellite cable instead of the unshielded old brown cable which would give a better signal with less interference. If you have a portable TV that you could take into the loft with an extension cable, you could test the connections from the SLX6 and bypass the wiring in the wall to rule out a problem with that.
The SLX6 does require mains power so check that it is switched on and receiving power. There does look like there is an LED on it to show whether it is powered on.
Tell us where the aerials are, which aerial is connected to what TV and whether it connects to a splitter or amp.0
