Someone opened an electric account at my address
Hi Everyone just joined you in the hope someone can help me I'm very confused about what has happened and connot understand how this has happened, so hope I can explain it to you properly...
I live in a block of Flats and I am forever getting other peoples Mail but I think nothing of it and just put them in the hallway as there is a postlady who takes them back and other tenants take them if they belong to them...
My problem started when my Daughter phoned to ask how much my Electric was and when my Bill would be sent out ( I quite often do this as then I know exactly what I have to get together for it )
The operater told her that they were no longer my supplier someone had cancelled my supply in January!
and nobody knows who was supplying my electric my last bill was up until end of December which I paid the begining of January ( so I knew one was due around end of April begining of May )...
I am with Southern Electric my Daughter had to set it back up... so then I started to wonder how did this happen Southern Electric said they would look further into the matter and I recieved a letter from them saying that they would start my electric with them in 6weeks time, and don't know what is going to happen about the last 3 Months of electric...
So I thought the only thing that I can do is wait and see what they come up with.... My Daughter got my Mail from letterbox which is outside of Flats yesterday for me and there was a letter from Brithish Gas Addressed to someone else in my Address I remembered the name as before there was such letters sent as I said I just put them in the hall...
but then we decided to open it ( I know it was wrong and I'm worried now ) but I had to find out for piece of mind , Well it was for Electric and it had been sent to Debt Collecters so that sent me into major panic mode my age as everyone tells me.. So I asked my Daughter to ring them and find out she did and told them that that person does not live here and that I never changed my electric to British Gas,
He said that I had to send a Copy of my Tenancy Agreement to them to prove who I was I suppose... I really don't know what to do it is such a worry for me Oh the amount on the letter was for £210.00 my electric is never over £85.00 that's the highest for a winter bill I try to be very careful with it I have Gas Central Heating....
I really need some advise on what to do next should I send them a copy of my Tennancy Agreement? Thank you for reading and sorry it's such a long post . Kind Regards Q.

It is really hard to read what you have written as you have bunched everything together.
I have only glanced through your problem as it is so hard to read, but I would suggest any problems with an electric account I would try writing to whoever the dispute is with and seeing what they say.0 -
The good news is it's not you they are chasing for the money. Might be worth taking whatever documents you have and going to see Citizens Advice.
BG ought to have details of who they believe opened the account with them and when. Shouldn't be too difficult to prove to them you're somebody else, but I'm not sure what the legal position would be. Can't see the benefit of somebody else changing over your electricity supplier either, unless it was something like a rogue salesman after his commission.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. I would imagine that Brit6ish gas signed up someone within your block of flats and erroneously used your flat number instead of their own?
On that bill for £210.00, does the meter serial number given match up to the number on your actual meter?0 -
Same thing happened to me.....phoned by my supplier to say they were terminating my supply on (date).
Told them I had NOT changed suppliers, and they said THEY would deal with it.
Then got a letter from the new supplier but addressed to the wrong name, telling me they would start supplying on (date).
Of course I opened the letter following the phone call from my supplier.
I phoned the new supplier, and told them THEY were in error, and they had the wrong name as the customer.
The end result was, the supply was transferred to the new supplier for one one month (seems they are totally incapable of dealing with this sort of thing, without going through the processes. Incompetant's!)
This was catalogued as 'erroneous transfer' and my bills remained with my original supplier, and THEY dealt with the potential new supplier, who sent me a letter of apology.
WHEN!!!! Will they stop billing a house as the customer, and start billing the customer? Houses can't make and sign contracts!!! They should be made to obtain signatures before ANY changes occur!0 -
This is a scam.
An unscrupulous salesman has used your address to open a "new" account and gain commission.
You may have had a visit from someone who purported to be from a utilities supplier, saying they are calling on behalf of the electricity generating company in your region and they need to have the serial number of your meter. He may well have asked to see your last bill or asked who supplies at the moment..
From this information, he has sufficient data to open a new account with another company and grab his commission before they have time to find that the switch is bogus.
This happens regularly with utilities and telephone/broadband suppliers. The bogus salesmen usually have authorised documentation from Scottish Power or TalkTalk but, neither of these companies is involved in this and the papers and ID tags are false.
If the generating company needed to know your meter number (and why should they??) then they would just ask your account supplier, not send someone round street-by-street to collect it.0 -
Sorry, my case wasn't a scam. I won't speak to energy supplier sales people.
In my case I think it was a error by new people that moved in a couple of doors down, but that didn't occur to me until after the event. Still don't know what their name is....bit stand offish and don't talk to neighbours.0 -
if energy providers had to obtain signatures, people would never get energy for week after move ins. What about those that dont want to pay for energy and sign false names? This is the reason the deemed contracts were setup.Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0
