New fridge/freezer? Or freezer/fridge?

In the next few months I plan to get a new fridge/freezer, mainly to have a slightly larger freezer compartment than now.

The existing one is the traditional arrangement of freezer on top.

It's often suggested that having the fridge on top is better, as you use that more often and it would mean less bending down.

But I suspect bending down to rummage in a freezer compartment would be even more awkward, as it's there that you need to find things hidden at the back without the advantage of an interior light (or do new freezers have lights?).

Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this either way.

my previous one was fridge on top and my current one is fridge below, I prefer the current arrangement, largely for the reasons you give.

Whatever you do, make sure you get an efficient one, and one that's not too big for your needs, I scrapped the previous one not because it didn't work but because it was drawing 4kWh a day (the new one is about 1.3kWh a day). That's a difference in running cost of £150 a year:eek:

Fridge on top, how often do you go in the freezer twice a day? you know what you are going in for and approximately where it is.

Fridge on top, freezer down below.

Main reason is that MOST freezer sections will have drawers that are easier to get into than having to rumage around in an open cavity section...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

    Hi Ermine

The energy efficiency you mention is an interesting point.

Can I ask, what rating or model did you select in the end?

We have to buy all new appliances in a couple of weeks.

    Many Thanks :)

I assumed they mostly just had shelves still; I guess if they have drawers, that could make a difference to the ergonomics?

I'm not interested in the 'energy efficiency', I just interested in 'me efficiency'.

Maybe once a day. And I go in looking for inspiration half the time; I never know what is at the back until I've had a rummage.

I'll have to take a look at the current crop and see how easily accessible the drawers make the freezer.

My freezer is above my fridge and I prepare it this way. It has no drawers, just 1 shelf. It holds loads. I'd rather bend down for a bottle of milk than squat for ages rummaging to find what I want.

I'm going to be getting a new one soon, but I can't find one with the freezer on top, does anyone know where sell these?
