Irritating Calls

Options
I have been receiving numerous calls on my mobile from what I guess is a sales company using an automated dialler - I never get to the phone in time before they hang up (normally two to three rings) so I presuming this is what is happening.

I normally would'nt get wound up by it but I have received at least three calls during the middle of the night and early hours over the last two days. I have phoned 3 customer services who were predictably useless and advised me they could do nothing.

I know of one other person this has been happening to and wondered what I can do about it - I am registered with TPS for my home phone but I did'nt think this was for mobiles.

Any suggestions?

TPS does cover mobile numbers; http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/.
In the meantime, is it essential for you to keep your mobile switched on overnight? I switch mine off last thing and switch it on when the alarm goes in the morning. All the people who might need to call me in the middle of the night have got my landline. HTH:)

It's known as 'CLI dumping' and is normally made from a so-called 'personal' number (starting 070) in the hope that the 'receiver' will return the call thinking it's a mobile numberp and may even be a free call under their 'inclusive minutes' package (UK mobile numbers all start 077, 078 or 079 but NOT 070).

In fact, many such 070 personal numbers cost 50p per minute to call from a BT landline and vastly more from a mobile.

Don't return any calls to numbers you don't recognise and NEVER to numbers which start 070!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
