I bought a Acer Aspire Laptop in Aug 2010 from, Pc world. The battery is now not fully charging up above 50%. I have taken back to the store where purchased and they are telling me that the warranty is only 6 months on the battery???? WHAT?
I have never heard of this before and I am really not happy about it, considering I took out the 3 year extended warranty when I bought the thing. Surely the warranty should be a least 12 months, but the shop are telling me certain dealers do and others don't and Acer are one of the latter.
Has anybody else encountered this issue.

    depends also on how the battery has been (mis) treated/ try contacting Acer direct perhaps?

    Firstly you should look through your original paperwork that came with the laptop. Is there any reference to a warranty period of 6 months for the battery? Then look closely at your extended warranty, what does it cover?

    If you can't find something useful in there to bring back to the retailer then your next best bet would be the Sale of Good Act (SOGA).

    The key points that would apply in this case are that the product is...

    'Of satisfactory quality...'

    and...

    'Fit for purpose...'

    Any warranty, guarantee or extended warranty is in addition to your statutory consumer rights, it does not override them.

    I would ask them for an immediate repair or replacement or ask them for the address that they accept legal writs at.

    Unless the extended warranty gave you extra benefits (eg, loan machine while yours is repaired), you wasted your money.
    As far as batteries go, 6 months warranty is the norm regardless of how much extra warranty you purchase.

    Batteries are classed as consumable items - similar to the way brake pads and clutches are in cars.

    6 months is a standard warranty. How long a battery lasts is dependant ENTIRELY on how it has been treated. If its been run too hot or too cold it'll shorten its life. If its constantly used on mains, it'll shorten its life. If its left to go completely flat, it'll shorten its life.

    This is what happens when a company gets into financial difficulties. The business resorts to sharp practices, like denying the consumer his statutory rights - to lose less money.

    PC World, part of Dixons Retail plc, is really feeling the pinch as consumers further tighten their belts. The company's share price has been in freefall for years. Since 2007, the stock has collapsed 90% and is now little more than a penny stock.

    The financial press has mooted the possibility that the retailer will go bust if consumers continue to boycott the purchase of expensive consumer goods.

    Dixons is stuck between a rock and a hard place. It can muster fewer and fewer buyers and yet it is still obliged to pay the onerous rents agreed for the new stores it opened in plush city malls and in out-of-town retail parks when times were good

    Dixons may be in a race to the bottom here with Comet whose French owner KESA is looking to shut down its chain in England. There are just too may electrical retailers chasing too few consumers with too little cash. Once the marketplace is cleared in a Darwinian cull, the remaining businesses may be in with a fighting chance.

    As for the OP, stick to your guns and hold out for your consumer rights. Contact Dixons HO and discover whether this is a company-wide policy, or whether this just down to a tight-arsed bean-counting store manager acting on his own volition?

    It sounds like Dixons is quibbling over the definition of a consumable component, and whether that includes a laptop battery. These are expensive items. A replacement battery for £30 would be cheap. £50 is perhaps average, and charging £100 is not unheard of. All the more reason that Dixons rather than you should pay for its replacement.

    Batteries are consumable components. It is accepted INDUSTRY WIDE that they are consumable components. Dixons are not applying their own special rules.

    Can you please reference the relevant UK legislation that causes batteries to be classed as 'consumables' and exempt from the Sale of Goods Act? I'm not aware of such legislation so I would be very interested in reading it.
