You need to take stock of where you are and what you want out of life.
What are the things that really make you unhappy about your work, and what are the things that you do like?

Can you stay at work and tolerate it at the moment until Xmas is over?
You talk about lack of other jobs. What kind of thing have you been looking at?
Have you spent some time writing up a CV? It may not seem important but it can help you recognise your strengths and the experiences you have - not all of which come from your work.

Life is indeed too short to be unhappy at work but it doesn't always mean chaning jobs will solve it.

Is there any HR department where you work that you can talk to?

If you want to give me any more info on your situation I am happy to try and see what I can suggest. As part of my job I do counselling at work. Feel free to pm me.

Its awful to be in a job that you can no longer tolerate. I'm in a similar situation to that and also feel trapped by the wage security issue. I'm single have a mortgage and thats why I don't leave. I'm currently investigating a total career change but again its the fear or not being able to pay the mortgage that may prevent me from actually doing anything. I hate this conundrum and really need to find a way of conquering my fear(s).
Hope everything works out for you.
