Should I leave my job?

Hi.I feel I,m in a dilemma, but would be grateful for any advice.I,m considering quitting my job of three years as in all honesty I have always hated it and in the past year I have undergone some stressful situations. At times I have cried and felt nervous anxiety to the extreme.I believe that if I leave it will give me some breathing space to look for a job I want and at least don,t mind doing, rather than suffering with a job that is going nowhere and is just making me very miserable.I don,t want to be like this just because I,m afraid to leave the security of a wage.My hubby works but it would mean claiming a small amount of benefit.I have come to the conclusion that I want to work part-time(around my family),and don,t really want to claim, but I also really want to leave my job.(it is also partime)I think its virtually impossible to do anything different where I work, and I feel its all so dead-end anyway.Throughout the last year I have continually been looking for something else but no job is suitable, those few that were,I didn,t get.At the moment I am just stalling, but have to make a decision now. This site gives some great advice,I hope I may receive some too.Thanyou in advance

  • If you can afford to leave and take some time to find a better job for yourself, then just do it - life is too short to stay in a job you hate.

Thankyou.I think this is what I wanted to hear. Its just that I feel a bit horrid having to claim anything before another job becomes available. As much as I hate my job I had always believed I had to secure another job first, like I have to do the right thing. But I know that I am also constantly stressing out everytime I go into my place of work and I think if I don,t just pack up and leave I fear I will always be stuck there, not giving myself or pushing myself into a better opportunity because I tend to just plod along, and put up with things. Thanks for your reply.

If you simply quit your job, then I doubt if you will get any benefits at all for weeks (months?). Better to have something lined up first.
  • Sounds like it could be "Resolution Time" for you! *smile*You're about to step forward into a New Year so why not take the time now, relax and enjoy the Holiday Season a bit, and then perhaps begin a search for something new after 1st January? You are obviously very unhappy and hurting in your current situation. You're amazingly brave and honest in stating you don't wish to claim needlessly but have come to realize you're in a place where things are no longer right. Give yourself credit for not ignoring you own pain and finding the courage to speak up!

Remember, people are often looking for new and exciting things and find the New Year is a great opportunity to start fresh. Look at how many of us start new diets, begin exercising, etc. just because it's 1st January! There may be more opportunities available come the New Year and while working may be a necessity (it is for me! *grin*), your health and more importantly your sanity, is crucial to you and your family's well-being. You need to do what is right for you! Take a little time for yourself ... you'll be glad you did and good luck in the future! I hope you find the job of your dreams, whatever that may be! *hug* Annie

Your job is obviously causing you an immense amount of stress, perhaps you could ask your GP to support you in saying that you are leaving due to stress? This will most likely mean that you can claim JSA straightaway, rather than having to wait up to eight weeks.

I have recently left my job for much the same reasons, I just hated it. It is not easy having to go on to benefits for a while, but at the end of the day you are doing it for your health, which I think is as good a reason as you can get.

    Good luck x

If you give up your job you wont be entitled to JSA, you can be sanctioned up to (I think) 26 weeks, its better to stay where you are for now and look elsewhere and then go straight into another job :)

Not sure if I have picked up on it wrong but you say you dont want another job within the company because it would be dead end but you want to take a job as a part timer around family time? Being realistic it is unlikely that you will find a high flying career type role if you are looking for part time work... the vast majority of part time roles, esp those with the flexibility for around family time are dead end jobs (at least in my experience).

I have to say I have a personal issue with the majority of benefits and therefore my advice would have been to start looking for work now and give your notice once you have found alternative employment unless you can afford to be without the salary

Are you sure you would get any sort of benefit if you leave your job voluntarily?

Why not look into perhaps getting more in the tax credit line, as you will have no income. Most of us have had to do jobs we are not happy in. My stint cleaning lavatories springs to mind:rotfl: :rotfl:

Put all your details into https://www.entitledto.com and see what it comes up with.

I think so yes,we would get some housing benefit and council benefit,so the entitledo says, the forms do not ask if I have given up work, only who is working and who is not, they do not request info like have I voluntarily given up work.We would also get slightly more tax credit. You know I understand we all do jobs we don,t like, its why I punished and pushed myself to stay at my company for three years, but I really don,t want to do this anymore.I physically hate it.My stomach is always in knots and the variety of other jobs I have had never made me feel as bad as I have, especially recently..I don,t mind cleaning loos,in fact on and off for the last 20 years I have been a cleaner,I think I like it:rotfl: and I wouldn,t mind going back to this as it would fit in with my family.Thankyou so much to you,and to everyone who has replied, especially to those who are spurring me on to take a different, hopefully more fufilling job future.:T

life's way too short to be unhappy at work. I have been there and done that....and its so not worth it.

if you would be able to manage on your husband's wages then go for it.
