Is this laptop any good?

Options
I'm looking for a new laptop for my mother in law and saw this one at Argos.

http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500002701&langId=-1&searchTerms=5085257

I've usually bought Dell ones but this looked like a good price for what you're getting (an Intel i5 processor).

Do you think she should go ahead and buy one, or pay something similar for one with an i3 processor from Dell?

Thanks

From the cheap laptops thread £249 - http://direct.asda.com/Fujitsu-Lifebook-AH530-Notebook--15.6ins---2GB---250-Hard-Drive/000507723,default,pd.html

What use requires i3/i5 cpu ?

edit - it doesn't seem to exist on the acer website ??? Argos special ?

If you must buy a flash processor (i3, i5 etc) you don't have to spend £450! 2 options
    1. £350 Toshiba with 2 years warranty http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5084760/Trail/searchtext%3ETOSHIBA.htm
    2. £290 i3-370M http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/eMachines_eME732_1017508.html

    Hi,

Thanks both for your advice. I'll check to see what else is available in the lower price bracked. I just happened to see the Acer laptop advertised in one of the Argos flyers so that's what drew my attention to it!

An i3 processor isn't essential - they just want something that will keep going for a few years.

In that case, if your budget can handle it, I'd certainly recommend an i3 processor. (And a good warranty followed close behind.)

I generally think most laptops are built the same (its two main compaines that produce them anyway Compal and Quanta (about 82% of ALL LAPTOPS PRODUCED come from Tainwan and about 90% of that is from these two companies) ) But like I was saying, I generally think theres very little to choose from between systems, but for the love of all that it good and holy stay away from that emachines.

Thanks - didn't know this, and it explains why there's little difference between specs of different brands!

It all really depends what she wants to do with it. If she's going to surf the internet, use email and type the odd letter or 2 pretty much any laptop will do. If she's going to take it around absolutely everywhere size & weight may matter. If she's going to do video/image editing 3d games, software development, heavy computational work that woudl change the picture quite a bit ... :)

Just to let you all know, in the end we went for this laptop from Dixons: ACER - Aspire 5750 4GB Core i3 Laptop - Black.

Paid £369 - original price was £399 but got a £30 off code. It had been mentioned on HUKD a few weeks ago when there was 10% off and it was popular then so I hope that it'll fit the bill.

    Thanks!
