hello all,
Please be gentle as not to 'techy'...!
Ok....Start a new job Monday-working from home. I have been sent a MITEL 8622 IP phone. The company I'll be working for will install full fast (24mbp+) ADSL & a phone line in around a month. In the meantime I'm using my current ISP provider-Virgin (I'm on the package of up to 10 MBPS).
Problem is....I've only got a bradband modem (Ambit-model number E08co12.00). It has ONE LAN socket (& no other LAN input sockets on back of base unit)-the blue Ethernet cable goes from this to the back of the PC. So...nowhere to plug the other ethernet type lead (that came with the phone) & get the phone working! I've been with Virgin 15 months now. Phoned them-they tried to flog me the Super Hub (does speed up to 100mps)-tie me into a new 12 month contract...FREE but pay £30 fee to activate & 6 months at £5. They also offered the standard 'hub' router-which if I'd asked for it at instilation would have been free & is free for new customers- (which has 4 LAN sockets) for SIXTY QUID (even though I'm a current customer giving the £65 a month for the bundle!). Now I know I'm in a strong bargaining position by threatening to leave etc....BUT TIME IS NOT ON MY SIDE. Every day the phone is not connected I'm not working!
Is my best solution to shell out for a broadband router today (think they're from £15 upwards) & if so is it easy to set up? I just need the ONE extra ethernet connection point (LAN) & I'm guessing I'm up & running?
HELP! Only reallu got today/tomorrow to sort this!
Any experts that can help in baby language would be great!!!
(P.S.-No laptop-just boring base unit on XP-with a 37.3 gig memory with 26 gig free...my work won't involve heavy downloads/file sharing etc...).

Switch off modem
Connect LAN port on modem to WAN port on router.
Connect LAN port on router to your PC.
Switch on modem, allow 20 secs or so for it to sync.
Switch on router, allow 20 secs or so for it to boot fully.
Switch on PC.
Job done.
PS
Note the above is a "one time" procedure, any other devices you connect to the router will have net access instantly.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -
