Tax Credits Owed to us.

Hi all, my wife recently received 2 letters from tax credits stating that she was owed a tidy sum of money. This dispute has been going on since 2002. This money was issued via BACS on the 6th May to her normal bank account, well according to the letter. When the bank account was checked the money was not there, so she rang them only to be told that it had been paid into an old bank account which was closed about 5 years ago. Needless to say she is still waiting for the money to be paid into the correct account. They told her today (20th May) that the money had been reclaimed from the old bank account but they couldn`t or wouldn`t tell her when she could expect. She is at her wits end again. Over the years she has suffered debt, stress you name it she`s had it. We only married 3 year ago so this has been going on for a while. Can any one give us some advise please.:(

Ignore the above poster OP.....obviously nothing better to do with it's sad life than be a moneysavingexperts forum troll......

I don't think that Tax Credits would be able to commit to a timeframe for recouping the money - as they don't have control over this, the bank does. Is the account it was paid into closed, or if not closed, it doesn't have a debit balance or anything does it? That I imagine could cause complications!

Has she checked with the bank to see what their timeframes are on returning monies paid into an incorrect account?
  • The bank account has been closed for nearly 5 years, and tax credits were informed of the changes. The annoying thing is is that they have been paying money into her new account since the day it was opened and still are.

We had this problem at the beginning of the year, hubby got 3 payments of WTC and they went to an old account that had been closed 6 years, tax credits wouldnt do anything unless we told them the old bank account number whic we didnt have, we went into branch with ID and got the number rang tax credits and within a week the money was in the correct account
