Shared cable box.

Options
Hi

I am a techno rookie so please be patient.

We had cable connected years ago, when it was first laid down in the grove. A few months later our neighbours decided to also have cable, but they didn't want the flags on their driveway dug up in order for the cable to reach their house. We agreed to allow them to run their line from the outside box attached to our house with the understanding that both houses had seperate accounts.

As the years have gone by we (and they) have acquired numerous additions to the internet accessing paraphenalia in the house. The neighbours have now had a second cable run from the outside box to give their son his own account.

The problem we have is that our own internet connection seems very sporadic and quite slow at times. We run a couple of computers and x boxes wirelessly, and on occassion the signal is lost and the boys get knocked off their consoles.

I know that wireless connections can be less reliable than wired, but I am wondering if the neighbours using our outside box may be effecting the 'bandwidth' of our signal.
(Does this make any sense?)

I would appreciate any advice.

    No - not related.

Both you and your neighbour will each enjoy an exclusive "copper pair" all the way from your home to the cable distribution hub, wherever that may be.

Wireless problems are commonplace. Lots of things could be the cause. Noisy electrical appliances in the neighbourhood, maybe. Or just poor quality radio modules in your access point and/or your wireless equipment.

    Yes, but...

The thing is your connection would be contended at some point, and whether it is at that box or somewhere further down the line. But that is quite aetheric/literal. To all intents and purposes, no.

    Thanks for your replies:)

I guess its time to get someone who knows what they are doing to set up a proper home network for us, as our demand for internet access is only going to increase as time goes by.:o

Forget wireless. You can't beat CAT6 networking cable. It's the best stuff for trussing up the in-laws before you store them in the cellar. Maybe that could solve your neighbourly problem?

If the problem with being kicked off is on the wifi, change the channel being used. Avoid like the plague 1,6,10,11 which are common "defaults".
