Books for Baby

I forgot to say that you new niece or nephew will be entitled to a series of three Bookstart packs (if living in England). These are to promote books and reading with all pre-school children. They have their own website that you could look at. The first two packs (one at approx 6 - 9 months and the next at 18 - 24 months) are avaliable from health visitors and most libraries. The third set (given at about 3 years old) is given by pre-school settings although we (health visitors) also have a small supply. They are brilliant resources including at least two books in each pack, nursery rhyme cards, stickers etc and all for free so make sure your sister in law knows about them!0

Most books are beyond small babies - but they still love story time, so it really doesn't matter. My DS loved the "That's not my....." series - there are lots of them to choose from, and they have touchy-feely bits and easy to turn pages.
The Snail and the Whale was a favourite (still is, but is now in 2 pieces) - anything with a sort of cadence to it that is easy to read aloud.
Janet and Allan Ahlberg books are great as well - Cops and Robbers is nice to read and they love it as they get a bit older, so is Peepo, that will go down well with granny.

:T:T...Also Room on the Broom, both by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. I still love reading them to my nearly- four- year- old, though I don't really need the book in front of me
. DD (7) loves them too. Find something *you* like to read, chances are they'll like to read them too. Baby will learn to enjoy books from their example. They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.

I'd stick to board books until the kids turn two - otherwise you're just asking for ripped pages. I'd also avoid the flap-type books (e.g. "Where's Spot") for a while because young kids will just rip the flaps out.
Agree with this.
Kids love handling books, turning the pages, looking at the pictures, thinking about the words... and, when they're babies... chewing the pages, touching the pictures, tugging the flaps, etc. Yes, it does mean that the books get... badly foxed if not totally damaged and need to be replaced at some point. But I think it's worth it. Reading is not as enjoyable when you don't get to participate yourself.
I think the touchy-feely books are lovely for very little ones. The "that's not my..." series is good e.g. That's Not My Dinosaur. When they get older, a mix of colourful, illustrated modern titles (that Julia Donaldson seems to be everywhere) and old-fashioned "classics". Frankly, I find it surprising that books such as "The Tiger Who Came to Tea" and "Mog the Forgetful Cat" have such longevity but they were written for kids not adults and my two darlings love them.0 -
I love books and wanted my son, who's 7 months, to grow up feeling the same. We have two sorts of books, the 'baby' cloth/board ones for him to play with/read and story books, which are for us to read to him before bed.
I got a bit overexcited when pregnant so he has the whole mr. men library, hungry caterpillar, a fairy tales collection, newborn books.. All bought from The Book People pretty cheaply.
I also bought a lovely book for my oh to read with him from amazon
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Love-My-Daddy-Sebastien-Braun/dp/1905417659/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1305972550&sr=8-3
Might be an idea to encourage dad to get involved although it often ended in tears... my oh's not our son! I have a mummy version of the book and it gets me every time

When's baby due btw? Another 'set' of books I really appreciate is the Christmas themed ones. They get put away each year for the following one. The 1st one my kids had was 'The night before Christmas'.0
