Washing Machine died only 18mths old - Help !

Hi,
My mother has a Hotpoint washing machine that was bought for her 18mths ago from Comet Clearance. It's packed in now and I've checked on the Comet Clearance site and they state that the warranty is only 6 months. However, I've been told elsewhere that Hotpoint have a 5 year parts warranty. Either way, I don't consider 18 months to be a reasonable lifespan of a new washing machine.
I tried ringing Comet just now, but at close to half-five on a Friday, it was odds-on I was going to be just listening to hold music for hours, so I hung up after ten mins waiting.
What's the score with this ? ( apart from Mother 0 - Comet 1
)
Do I have any recourse on this ? My mum is 80 this week and can't really afford another machine, and from the machine's behaviour, I strongly suspect one of the two main logic boards have gone - and they are over £150 each !

as it is over 6 months old, then you are going to have to get a report to show it was a manuafacturing fault and would of failed from the start, and then you would have to go back to comet and take it from there.

hotpoint do have a 5 year gurarantee but you would of had to register the product when it was bought

It's a Hotpoint, so unfortunately it's rubbish quality.
It is worth you pursuing Comet under the SoGA. As I or most average people would expect it to last longer than that. It fails the durability test miserably.0 -
1. Do a "search" on this site, this question is asked at least every other day and has been "done to death" umpteen times.
2. There are plenty of websites, official and unofficial, which answer this question - read them !0 -

1. I have already "searched" this site, and did not find any posts that related to the same scenario as my mother's - i.e. two guarantees.
2. Really ? And there was me thinking that I could ask for some help in the relevant section of a relevant forum. Thankfully, the other respondents have been very helpful.
3. What is the point of taking the time to post a curmudgeonly reply that basically says 'look it up yourself' ?? Would it have been so painful to offer a quick line of helpful advice ? Apparently so.
4. There is no 4 - just re-read points 1 to 3 again.0 -

By the way OP unless the washing machine was sold with known faults/damage then your statutory rights are the same under the SOGA.0
