Isn't that how they grow? they creep along rather than climb, I'm sure.

This is correct - like most Cucurbits, they trail (Curcubits include Squashes, cucumbers, Courgettes, Pumpkins and IIRC Melons).
You can train them if you wish, but they usually just flop about. I would suggest putting something under them as they grow though, I found some Cucurbits go either hard underneath or if it's too wet, soggy and mouldy.
