My question is what if the item is damaged or there are scratches? Do I not sign for it and ask the delivery men to return the item? Or do I sign for the item and then later contact the company I boaght it from?

Hopefully it won't happen. But you have two options:

    a) accept delivery, then raise a 'Significantly Not As Described' dispute through Paypal. You will get a refund - but only when you return the items, and have PROOF that you have returned them. This would be expensive for you to return (or you could contact the company...but if they refuse a refund then you open the dispute)

    b) check the items before they are delivered and signed for. Refuse to accept them, refuse to sign for anything. Tell the courier to return them, but sign nothing. Raise an 'Item Not Received' dispute through Paypal. You will get the refund as the buyer has no proof of delivery if you don't sign anything. This is your better option.

This happened to someone on here last week - they bought a wood burning stove for £300, signed for delivery, then saw it was damaged and sent it back. Buyer raised a 'SNAD' but of course can't return it - because he doesn't have it. Seller has proof of delivery, so not obliged to refund. Buyer is left out of pocket, with very little hope of reclaiming the cash. :(

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

If it's damaged, don't accept delivery.
If it's not damaged, sign it "not inspected x xxxxx"
Don't sign for it as "recieved in good condition"

That way at least there can be a claim on the carrier if they have marked it.

("No returns" has no meaning on ebay, I'm pleased to say, but you'll have to pay to send it back)
