The probate interview was far less intimidating than I was expecting. I had to prove my identity, and swear an oath. The official then went through the probate forms that I had prepared myself and was very helpful in pointing out a mistake. They are there to help, not to catch you out. I went to sub registry and the Grant of Probate was delivered by post a few days later. The interview took about 20 mins. It is advisable to buy several copies of the Grant of Probate as it saves having to wait for them being returned if there are lots of organisations which need to see them. The worst part for me was having to go to the Crown Court where the interview was held. Not so bad the second time. Can't help with your second query as I was sole executor both times I went.

I'm with flora48 on this, it's far less informal than you would imagine and you will almost certainly need a few copies of the grant. Dad died intestate so don't know about the executor issue but if you call the probate sub-registry dealing with the matter, I'm sure they could tell you.
