Live Messenger freeze

Can anyone help?
When I sign onto Live Messenger (v8.0) it freezes for upto 40 seconds. I've seen fixes such as deleting 'policies' under regedit (which I can't find) and also turned off windows firewall exceptions for messenger. (Win firewall is off altogether as I use Zonealarm)
The problem still persists. Its fine when up and running but the initial delay is frustrating. Would upgrading to v8.1 solve this? Any other fixes?
