'Dole' First-Timer Seeks Urgent Advice!

Hi everyone,

My 37k job contract ends in exactly 2 weeks.

Job applications have all failed so far.

My circumstances include:
- mortgage £1200/month
- baby, 7 months old
- wife, at home with student status until autumn
- zero savings

Will the government pay my mortgage?
What will happen to me?
How long does it take for the first dole payments to come in?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Please advise :/

JSA usually doesn't take very long.

The government won't pay your mortgage, they will help to pay the interest, so you will need to stop payments for the duration of your unemployment.

Once you are on JSA, you can look to claim ISMI, which will help pay the interest of the mortgage. You can claim for this after 13 weeks of being on benefits.

Gosh £1200 a month for a mortgage is huge! I believe that you can get mortgage payments but these only cover the interest and only come into effect after 13 weeks.

You would be able to apply for job seekers allowance though I am unaware of the timescales. If you are pai in arrears I am not sure if you can claim until after you recieve your last wage but someone will clarify that.

Do you currently get tax credits?

It's definitely a large mortgage to have, and with that sort of money you have make sure 100% that you have permanent, steady work.

What relic said. Plus you will get help with interest up to 3.63%. If it's more, you will need to meet the gap. And you can only claim for up to £200 000 of your mortgage.

All this assumes that you are entitled to an income related topup to your JSA. This would happen if your joint income becomes very very low, or if you have not paid enough NI contributions in the relevant years. Otherwise I don't think you'd get help with the mortgage.

Have a look at the http://www.turn2us.org.uk/benefits_search.aspx benefits checker.

You wont like this but the solution to the problem is simple.

Short time try to seek a job that pays similar to your previous one. After Autumn your wife needs to seek employment too.
Longterm you will need to consider downsizing/moving if you cannot meet the money you require.

£37k household income isn't all that massive (assuming your wife has no income as a student) but you should have tried to make savings especially that you have a baby.
