Family of Four - Hotel in London

Hi all, wife and I, and the two munchkins aged 5 and 3 are spending two nights in London at the end of July. Can anyone recommend a hotel that is reasonably priced and caters for children?
We fly into Stansted - what's the cheapest way of getting into the city centre?
TIA

get the stansted express train. Not done it for a few years, but I think it is better prebooked...price wise
hotels - what style/budget/area etc? It's a big place with a lot of hotels

Is Stansted Express more reasonable than the Heathrow or Gatwick varieties?
As for hotel, ideally somewhere not too far from Covent Garden would be great, and either a big family room or interconnecting rooms, but at as good value as possible! I know london hotels aren't the cheapest, so maybe if you could suggest somewhere further out from the centre but with good tube links that would be great?0 -
It's about £28 so expensive, but not sure there are many other options really...
I stayed in Russell Hotel in Russell Sq a few years ago, two night stay was about £80 a night BB and that was over Easter Weekend so not bad rate. www.principalhayley.co.uk
We walked to Covent Garden from there, it was a fair way, but doable.
I've just booked the Premier Inn at Beckton, which is on the Docklands Light Railway end, so in the East. That's quite far out (although ok for us as we are going to O2 Arena) but it was £75 a night for a room - most PI were well into three figures a night..
Try this link - http://www.devere.co.uk/offers/leisure-offers/venues-summer-lovin.html
you could get Devenport house which is near Greenwich for a great rate - problem is as you have kids you need to book on phone, due to limited family rooms.
If you are in UK - get the Saturday Daily Mail - the big chains e.g. Hilton De Vere, Marriott, Barcelo, Principal Hayley (Russell Hotel) etc, will advertise their 2 night promotional rates in there.
EDIT: if you go onto www.superbreak.com and look for the Charing Cross - A Guoman Hotel, you can get a room on line for £110 at moment per night, which is a great rate for the location - be quick lol0 -
Maybe somewhere either central or west, or at least with simple transport links to Windsor, would be useful, as we're hitting legoland at some point!0

look at Slough then, loads of cheap options there!
I have stopped in the Premier Inn quite a bit there, and also the Travelodge, and both are fine. I always preferred the PI as it has free parking, and I could walk to the office. I have stopped at the Innkeepers, which is(was?) just off the motorway, and across from the Marriott....that could be a TL now.
(and it always reminds me of Betjeman's poem.....Come Friendly Bombs..) But its ok for a base.0
