BRITISH GAS - ARGH! Chasing for payment of money not owed
I spotted somebody from British Gas posting on here, so hopefully they'll spot this thread...
We at work get chased by British Gas for payment every few months, for standing charges backdated 3-4 years.
I go through the pain of their hopeless Indian call centres who dont seem to see the problem.
We have always been meant to be on contracts with no standing charge, just a high unit rate. British Gas in their infinite wisdom however keen changing this so we get a better deal, to a standing charge and cheap gas.
WE DO NOT USE ANY GAS, and have not used any since moving into the building. So we call them when we see these bills, explain, and they say it's all sorted. Then a month or two later we'll get a debt recovery company chasing us for money.
So we call again, they push it to the disputes team, who say it's all sorted.
A few months go by, and through come the chasing letters.
I now have a letter here wanting to charge £350 to disconnect us, and payment of £305.32 that they claim we owe.
I called them up, and sure enough they sent it back to disputes again - who I cant call or email, they will contact me.
So please British Gas, get your act together, get somebody who has some authority and ideally intelligence, and dare I suggest it, some initiative, to give us a call and sort this out.
Account number is 643647 - you should be able to get all you need to know from there.
Thanks
Ben

I had a problem of which the prolonged non-resolution was never forthcoming. They owed me £50 cashback, which they acknowledged but I could never get them to credit me or send a cheque. They kept passing me from one department to another with no none taking responsibility for resolving it.
Eventually, I wrote to them telling them I was in the act of changing suppliers and that finally got a result! - Then I changed suppliers!
I see that you don't actually use any gas, but why not do as I did - a retentions team then gets involved and they seem to have more clout than the rest of them put together.0 -
That is a good plan - but as we have no gas, we dont need any supplier. If we get cut off, should we leave this building we would have to pay to get it connected again, so I believe leaving BG would cause more trouble, and with no business to offer a new supplier, we aren't that tempting an account

Hi EvilChap
Sorry about the trouble that you seem to be having, I can definitely look into this for you and see what needs to be done.
Unfortunately, out standard account numbers are 12 digits, so I cannot use the one you have posted above. I'm not sure if that is a debt reference, or potentially a business account (as you said this is at work) which are managed by a specialist department.
Would it be possible for you to send me your name (or the company name if it's a company account) and address to PAYGE_MSE_contact@britishgas.co.uk? Then I will be able to find the details and check up on what is happening.
