what's BT's cooling off period??

Hello,
Sorry if this is going to be long but I am in a pickle...

Been with BT for 11 years, been paying £43 per month for nearly 2 years for home phone and broadband, in feb paid my line rental up front to BT (£120 deal).

My direct debit then went up by £5 this month - that's after me paying my line rental in advance = not happy.

I phoned talktalk first to get some ammo to go to BT with! TTalk could offer me anytime phone, unlimited Bband and line rental for £19.85 per month. BT can do similar for £21.50 per month bearing in mind that I've already given them my line rental money so to make it like for like BT = £31.50 per month.

As i initially phoned TTalk I said to them that I wanted to consult with BT to see if they could match TTalk's deal. It was the TTalk guy that put me through to BT and he was then listening in on the conversation I had with BT! When I was nearing the end of my conversation with the BT lady the TTalk guy cut me off and brought me back to talking to him. I then recieved a text from BT saying thanks for my order.

I decided to go with TTalk and gave them my direct debit details.

Called BT back just to check if there would be any cancellation charges. Told no but I would lose all of my £120 line rental money I'd already paid up front. Ok I thought, I'll have to stay with BT as I don't want to lose that money.

Called TTalk back to cancel and they then offered to give me £70 credit to my account if I still signed with them, to cover my losses. Ok, I'm swayed again, with def go with TTalk.

Now got a letter from BT saying that to terminate my contract a fee of £169 to cover the 12months charges is due!! I didn't know I was now on a 12month contract just by phoning them to ask about price deals.

Called BT to query and was told that as soon as i ordered my new deal that was me entered into a new contract, i said to him that i was not aware of this being the case and besides my call to BT had been cut off before, in my eyes, being finalsied. I never said bye or thanks to the woman to conclude procedures as my call was stopped by the Ttalk man. BT guy is now going to get someone to listen to my call recording but that could take 10 days...

I now don't know whether to stay with BT or go with TTalk.

Is there a cooling off period for BT? TTalk have 7 days cool-off for new contracts, as far as I'm aware, so i can phone them tomorrow to cancel. But if BT uphold my claim and decide i don't need to pay the £169 fee then I've lost my deal with TalkTalk.

Feel I've been conned into a 12month BT contract just by asking what they can offer me. Because I done it over the phone do distance selling regs apply too because she said my order would be put through today, was the the start of my contract? It's only been 7 days since i phoned.

Trying to save money and I end up in a jam!

Thanks,
C

    Hi cazzapop

Hi I have just seen your post in relation to the cancellation charges that you have been quoted if you leave BT, I can look into this for you to see what the situation is with your account and what charges if any would be applicable. If you check out my profile section you will find my contact details and if you send over your details I will take a look into this.
