Just as a point of interest on this, I had a similar issue with a lawnmower from B&Q a couple of years ago. The manager told me that they have no facilities to test or repair anything, so it all gets sent back to the manufacturer. So no central testing as suggested earlier.
I actually wanted a repair (the mower was brilliant!) but they just couldn't do it. As I had half a garden with nice tidy grass and the other half looking like waste ground, he just agreed to give me a credit note towards a new one. Couldn't even find a price for it, so just gave me £50, when both he and I knew it was no more than £40.0 -
I don't get why this thread turned from the issue of the OP wanting to return the item to conspiring to defraud... Then arguing about it...OP, I'm sure you could try returning it to a store telling them it's rubbish, if they refuse - take it to another store and tell them it's faulty as a last resort.... Next, someone will probably come out and say get a screw loose and make it faulty. - Not that I'm saying to do that at all
Edit: Just realised my 'conspiring to defraud' sentence up there is completely invalid considering my last sentence, so ignore that bit I guess0 -

Have you heard of a barcode? Do you have any idea what a barcode contains?
Now that made me laugh :rotfl:
The barcode contains a series of numbers, that is all, and they are product specific, not different for every single item in that product range, so all B&Q would know is that a certain model of lawnmower had been returned, if they got more then one, then who returned which one would not be determined by the barcode on the box!!!0 -
Bought a new flymo 330VX lawnmower today which is brilliant!
Not from B&Q though.......!!!!!!!!0 -
Have you heard of a barcode? Do you have any idea what a barcode contains? The collection of data is not a difficult process - they would most likely outsource testing or indeed return it to manufacturer, which although may not necessarily adjust the returns acceptance it could significantly affect future product cost as this has to be factored into the manufacturing supply and cost chain.
As for trying to get the pruchaser to give the money back, you might want to check the small print on a returns receipt next time you have one, you might be surprised what it says...
Absolute rubbish!
This 'fit for purpose' line is so overused round here - If, in the OP's opinion it doesn't cut the grass nicely that is NOT acceptable for fit for purpose - its the manufacturers specification and detailled capability versus actual performance.
If the mower doesn't cut grass in general then the product is not fit for purpose - but if the product cuts grass then its fit for purpose, the quality to which it cuts the grass is why you get more expensive mowers than £40.
How do we know the length of the grass the OP is trying to cut? It could be a foot deep for all we know...seriously this 'fit for purpose' line seems to have become the answer to every thread on here when it simply isn't.
Fit for purpose is not based on personal opinion, its based on manufacturer specification/performance versus actual specification/performance.
What a load of old tosh. Stop scare mongering the lady. All the OP has to do is go in very pleasantly into the store and say i have just bought this lawnmower last week and it keeps cutting out every so often. Now can i have a refund please. Worst case they will say you will have to have store credit and then she can buy the more expensive one. Its as easy as that ive done it loads of times and ive not been locked away yet :rotfl:0
