I've overcharged on postage.

I sent an item today and it managed to go as a letter but I charged for large letter, the difference is about 20p should i refund it or contact the buyer first?

For 20p???? No need to do anything

I gave a P&P price to a buyer in Italy as quoted by my local post office. Turns out, when I came to send it off, I was quoted completely wrong by about £12! Reimbursed the buyer who was very grateful at my honesty.

It depends how your DSRs are. You can take the moral high ground and refund immediately, so not risking a buyer who will mark you down seriously on stars, or cross your fingers that your buyer isn't loopy. I'd go for safety, which I know sounds ridiculous, but low DSRs are worse than a neg, I think. Or you could contact the buyer offering a refund, and hope they'll tell you not to bother.

Christ Almighty. Is it getting so pathetic that people moan over 20p when they know the postage charges?

Don't forget that postage charges can include not only the price of the stamp but the packing materials and some compensation towards the time taken. If you're just charging the cost of the stamp, you're diddling yourself because Paypal will want 3.4% of the postage as commission and you've got an envelope at a few pence at the very least.

I know I probably sound both pathetic and neurotic, but I have met some absolute doozies as buyers over the last few months, and I no longer assume anything.

No, I would not refund for that amount.

I try to be fair in my p&p charges but would not quibble (or expect a quibble) over such a small amount. Many other sellers charge way more than the actual postage cost (whether for packaging, time, petrol or simply a little extra profit.) I think that when a buyer places a bid, it is up to them to decide whether they are happy with the postage rate. If not, don't bid. Its the one part of the price that you know won't change.

You are of course both right and reasonable - I just happen to have encountered buyers who were neither. In my final (doomed) attempt to get sense from ebay, I was told that it is no longer regarded as good practice for a seller to charge anything on top of the actual postage costs, and that 'a good seller will not expect their buyers to pay any packaging costs'.

I had a situation not so long ago where someone had bought 2 items off me, i combined the P&P but when i went to post it it was less than i thought by about 75p. I messaged the buyer and refunded them 50p and despite saving half the P&P costs they marked me down on my P&P stars.
