Britisg gas replacing main - make good???
My aged wifes parents have received a letter telling them that their gas main is to be replaced including the bit from the road to their meter in their garage. Their front garden is mainly very nicely done brick weave.
I can see disaster looming but what legal (not moral) responsibility does the gas main contractor have to leave the property as he found it. Slinging some loose soil into the hole & putting a few bricks back is not going to do it.
To do the job properly will require compressed hardcore back fill & then professional brick weave repair which I cannot imagine they will want to do.

I don't know what the responsibilities and so on are for work of this sort, but I know it won't be British Gas. It will be National Grid, or one of their subsiduary distribution networks that do the work, not your supplier, so they would be the people to ask about it.I am an employee of British Gas, however the views expressed on this post are mine and do not necessarily reflect the views of Centrica, its subsidiaries or affiliated companies.0

We had the mains pipe replaced at our house a couple of months ago, and the pathway was concreted over, same as was there previously. It looks crap, but so does the huge white plastic meter box now stuck right beside our front door! So it detracts from the terrible patch of new concrete there too! Always a bright side eh.0

British Gas dont replace gas mains.
The gas distribution network responsible for the area will have a reinstatement department or subcontract the work out to a competent company. Where there is an area providing vehicluar access this should be compacted appropriately before substantial reinstatement.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Typically the only reinstatement that a gas network wont complete is specialist surfaces. However they will generally bend over backwards to make good any excavations that may be required.0 -
The modern methods of mains replacement are such that digging and trenching is kept to a minimum.
Insertion techniques are oftn used i.e cut off the old steel pipe at either end and insert a smaller bore plastic one up the steel one.
Dont worry too much about it.
Engineers dont want to dig. Its costly, messy and upsets people.
Dont forget, these guys have been doing this for years..Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
