    OP

You really really need specialist legal advice here. However, for starters here is the wiki link for contract law:
The bit at the bottom about "undue influence" might be applicable, or least worth mentioning to the specialist legal bod..

    But what do I know?

    bw, anyway

I'm sure the almshouse people would be interested to hear about her finances.

I'm beginning to doubt everything about this story. Too many inconsistancies and impossible scenarios.

?? no inconsistencies and no impossible scenarios. It's all quite clear, 2 properties bought with her deposit and my name used for the mortgages as she had no declared income. She promised to bequith monies in her will to me on all profits made as she needed the money for her old age. Now she will not speak to me, has cut me and her grandchildren out of her life all because I would not leave my husband for her.

It just so happens she did a load of other things inbetween. Families are very complicated and some of the most ridiculous things happen.

It's a bit insulting to be told that the story is doubtful. Thanks.

I'd be investing in a pillow and paying her a visit some night tbh

I couldnt stuff her like that. What goes around comes around. She lives alone, has few friends, has no contact with her grandchildren whom she adored, no man in her life, 2 divorces and has become bitter and twisted. What would be gained by shopping her? All I was after was if I am entitled to go after some of the profits because I am entitled to it since it was my mortgage that helped her move up the property ladder. She's 67 and has to live with what she's done in her life and the relationships shes ruined.
(It's quite cathartic on here for me :)

    OP,

Just be a bit careful here. Some of the things that you have mentioned appear to be underhanded at best and possibly fraudulent. Your legal advisor will no doubt advise you if you could be in trouble.

(I am not suggesting that you have, but fore-warned is fore-armed)

    Apolgies then.

Legal situation as I see it:

You borrowed some money (from mum) and bought some property. Your mortgage and your property (her deposit/contribution to your mortage repayments/whatever).

    You sold property.

You gave money to mum (either to repay the loan and/or as further gifts whatever).

The only way there is any legal come-back against mum is if
    a) fraud was involved (one of your posts suggests she forged your signature to take out a mortgage in your name?) - go to the police or
    b) threats/blackmail etc were involved such that you handed over money under pressure as opposed to of your own free will

The impression I get is that you are unwilling to go to the police about a), but this is an option you have and that whilst there may have been emotional blackmail / family pressure, you acted of your own free will.

Pleased about the catharsis, but please come back with an easier problem next time - perhaps how to save money on teabags or suchlike!

Do you know anything about her will? Might you get whatever she leaves by default?

As she understands manipulation, threaten to tell the almshouse people about the finances unless she shares the profits. You decide later if you want to carry out that threat.

In your shoes, I'd walk away and leave her to her lonely existence. You make your bed and all that...
