Advice needed re cat, cat flap or out all day?

Go on - get a cat flap!
You know you want to!

For starters, it's not really a big deal to fit a flap in a uPVC door, and secondly, if your cat is used to being let in and out all day, it'll be a horrible shock for it to be suddenly locked out or shut in - either way, it'd be very disturbing for the cat, especially for one who is used to having someone around most of the time.

Just wanted to thank everyone for your replies. I am definitely going to get the cat flap, as I haven't got a job yet I could "train" her to use that while I'm still here so she'll have time to get used to it, and the infrared sounds like the best way to go, we already have a problem with other cats hanging around, so wouldn't want them in the house when I got home of an evening;) May seek the help of a handyman to sort out the door panel as I'm not really a DIY person;)

keep in mind i have a infra red at the min and will be upgrading to a micro chip one soon, as the sneeky tom has worked out hes can pull the door the other way! i`m hanging tight though as i think they are releasing one which can stipulate which cats you want to let out soon
