If cheap replacement carts are a must try and find an Epson...carts for the Dell 725 are around the £15 mark depending on current offers from Dell.
That Canon looks okay too...and generic carts are not too pricey.

    I agree.
Epson inks are the cheapest i have found.

    i get mine from https://www.ukdvdr.co.uk

Lexmark for £17.99 with a cartridge:

Collect in store (they are priced at £30 in store).

Lexmark branded cartridges are £14.99 each but you can get compatible cartridges for around £11.99 and they last quite a while.

Remember not to always use the highest print setting if the finish doesn't need to be spot on - save about a 1/3 of your cartridge then!

    thats the lexmark Ive got

the ink in it lasts about 2 weeks ( maybe printing one sheet a day on draft format) the replacement carts are approx 18 quid. Ive never found one for 11.99 unless it had a fiver postage on it.

I wont be getting one of these again - im getting a nice laser one one instead :)
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

the dell printer is a lexmark - expensive to run.

How about a Canon for less than 30 quid delivered...

    Canon ip1600 from Amazon

I bought this a few weeks ago and am really chuffed with it for everyday printing, homework etc. You can't get cheaper cartridges though so £12ish for the B&w and £15ish for the colour although they can be refilled.

BTW it came with one of each cartridge for less than £30 so I think a good deal.

Epson cartridges are cheap but the printer quality makes it false economy.

My £80 Epson C86 lasted less than two years (replaced after less than one, dead again after less than two). £40 a year for a printer I used pretty rarely, I reckon I could get a year out of a set of Lexmark cartridges which cost £24.99 (the cost of a printer which I'd just replace after a year).

Not that I'm recommending Lexmark, I'd say go for Canon.

By dead do you mean it wouldn't print or it wouldn't even turn on? I still have a C42 in my office that's almost 7 years old and it gets hammered daily. If you're ever stuck with the status light flashing and unable to print/perform a head clean it's more than likely that the protection counter has kicked in. This is to stop the ink pads overflowing (which is built up from repeated head cleans) and can be reset with a simple (free) application.
