Moving into a property - which providers?

Hiya,
We're in the process of buying our first house, it's a 3/4 bedroom house in Portsmouth and we are (at the moment) just a couple.
We have looked at my OH's dad's utility bills and have a general idea of what we'll be paying out, but in terms of signing up with a gas/electricity/water supplier how do we decide who we go with?
Is it the usual to sign up with the previous owners utilities and then switch later on? I want to get on the best tariffs as possible and will be looking to get a water meter fitted (it's going to be mandatory anyway in our area so might as well do it now)
Any advice on choosing would be great!

In terms of 'signing up with the previous owners utilities', you don't technically get the choice in that. You have to pay the current supplier of the property until you've changed to a provider of your choice. (the change can take 4-7 weeks).
Use a comparison site, like uswitch, to determine the best kind of deal for yourself in your area.Let us create a better world for the next generation.
