The Dell guy already suggested that so I emailed them and they replied saying they couldn't recall who they bought it off as it was an ad in a paper.CoolHotCold wrote: »you could of stolen it / it was stolen
Fair enough but as they've already carried out the repair, this issue should be irrelevant to who the laptop's registered to. I have sent them proof of purchase (Paypal payment confirmation) and that should be sufficient to get this sorted.0 -
Hi,
Do you not have the original Dell recovery CD for the laptop? Dell's are usually good at supplying the software CDs with their laptops and as the CD is made to only work with their laptops they don't require a CD key. The CD should be Dell branded and not a generic Windows CD. If you restore from this you shouldn't need the sticker. I work in IT and regularly restore Windows on Dell PC's and laptop's and never usually get asked for the CD key.

Dells no longer come with any DVD's and have not for about 6 months, (you are supposed to make them from Dell DataSafe) which brings them in line with every other manufactuer who no longer provide DVD's.
However without the age or model of the system it is impossible to say if they came with them or not.0 -

I didn't realise they had stopped completely. I noticed some of them you do have to select the CD as an extra when you build your system and they charge £10 for it or so. However the CDs aren't specific to the system, so you may be able to pick one up on ebay/through a friend/work etc and aslong as its dell branded it should work.0 -
Unforuntately, the laptop didn't come with the original recovery DVD and the previous owner had completely formatted the hard drive, thus deleting the recovery partition. Helpful eh?
But regardless, the laptop needs a COA to make the Windows installation legal.0 -
Ah but legally, under the 'Sales of Goods Act', the laptop has to last a reasonable amount of time, hence they are still legally obliged to repair it if it fails within that 'reasonable amount of time0

This is surely simple, unless the warranty is swapped over, then the OP needs to return it to the person they bought it off and get them to repair it with Dell.0

Not really. As they have to return it to the ebay seller, who will return it to the original owner, who will return it to Dell. It will be far simpler for the original buyer of the laptop to transfer the warranty to the current owner and then have them get it fixed under warranty properly.0
