Most times you'll encounter .CC are for sites hosting malware. Rarely they are for useful sites like raymond.cc - or cycling clubs for obvious reasons.

It's the country code for the Cocos Islands. The free webhost I use (zoka.cc) is registered there. It seems that a lot of small / cheap / dodgy websites use that country code TLD for some reason...

I would avoid them websites at all costs, unless you know it's a genuine one!

Indeed you could, however malicious websites are more than likely going to use less known domain extensions :P Talking from experience anyway :)

Nearly all of the infected Google image searches I've seen the past few weeks all were from .CC sites, so definitely know what you mean :) Seeing .CC should be an extra indication to be on the alert, unless it's a cycling or Christian site!

Another good example was when Techwatch.co.uk was hacked the other week:

    Malicious software is hosted on 6 domain(s), including retolop.cz.cc/, lopolop.cz.cc/, agamanius.cx.cc/.
    http://safebrowsing.clients.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?client=Firefox&hl=en-US&site=http://www.techwatch.co.uk/

The malware scripts all pointed to .CC domains. (p.s. clicking on the links takes only you to the google safe browsing page and not to a malware infected site)

10yrs + in the hosting industry i can say 100% STAY AWAY from .cc and .cz.cc sites these are free hosting sites that are primarily used by hackers/scammers etc.
most sites are only subdomains of the main site.

I use http://www.eqsl.cc/ which is a big amateur radio QSL card site based in the USA, most definitely not dodgy. Not sure why they use the .cc domain but guess they have their reasons.
