Want to connect netbook to tv

Options
Can anyone please help and tell me what cables I need as I'm really confused about converters and vga and whatnot!

I have an MSI Wind U135 DX it has a vga port usb port etc etc and I have an LG 1080p tv with hdmi port etc etc - I want to watch streaming movies via the netbook on the tv.

Any advice?

Thanks

You should be able to connect to a TV using a bog-standard VGA cable

    As above

But the netbook will struggle with rendering HD content. 1080p = 1920x1080

You may get it to render but it'll either be really laggy, or you'll have to drop the resolution

do you mean on the tv or the netbook? also, I know the netbook needs a 15point vga thing - but what should be on the other end? Should it be a Scart or the 3 coloured things or an hdmi plug?

    The Netbook

Once you connect it to the TV, if you go to the display properties on the netbook you will be able to adjust the resolution

Be advised though it would look shockingly rough the lower the resolution

Think about it this way - If they were designed to stream HD content, they'd have a HD screen themselves :p

Hmmm maybe not such a good idea then!

In the real world it would be fantastic if they could stream/utilise HD content, but in reality they are just not spec'd enough to handle it

IF you could get it connected to the telly, you'd need either a HDMI lead, component lead, or DVI lead to carry the HD signal.

But honestly, once connected and you start the stream, the netbook would crawl to a hault. The content would stutter and the sound/video would/may be completely out of sync

Sorry to put a downer on it

If you have a lot movies on your netbook in .avi or .mpg format then I would recommend you invest about £80 in a media player and watch the movies that way. I bought one approx 9 months ago and it was a great buy. Something like an AC Ryan Play On mini or Asus O Play R1 would do the trick. Have look in Amazon.

If your TV has a VGA input, then it's just a case of connecting to that for picture, and a separate audio cable (the netbook's mini-jack headphone socket) to the TV's audio input (L & R phono sockets) for sound.

The netbook's resolution is 1024x600, which is better than a standard TV's resolution, so if it will play movies standalone then it will do it to an external screen. You may have fun trying to get the resolution to match on your TV though, depending upon its capabilities.

However, if your TV hasn't got a VGA input (not many do, but it might), then a converter from VGA to HDMI can be had for around £60.

The processor in the MSI Wind U135DX is an Atom N455 (1.66GHz, 512KB L2). It's not that bad a processor.

At 317 on CPUbenchmark.net, the Atom's performance is about the same as a mid-end Athlon XP.

The video chipset on that netbook mainboard is the integrated Intel GMA 3150 which uses shared (system) memory.

The GMA3150 has two cores clocked to 200MHz. It does have MPEG2 acceleration and can support screen resolutions on an external analog VGA port of up to 1400 x 1050.

Go for it! Give it a try.

If your TV has a VGA port, then it's only the cost of a VGA to VGA cable to find out what happens.

If you haven't got a VGA cable to hand, then someone on ebay is sure to be selling one for £2 or £3.
