    Download a Ubuntu live distribution (usually in ISO form) burn it to CD and boot from it. Plug in an external USB drive and copy files from the internal hard disk to the USB drive.
    Also note that an Ubuntu live CD includes a disc utility which will probably be able to show information about th ehard drive even though the CD does not run from th ehard drive. I hav efound two HDs lately which were close to fail, but still working, using this utility.
